The First Project
Almost immediately after its creation, the Foundation received the first call for help. This came from the "Tête du Chien" project, named after a hill at the foot of France's Alpes Maritimes. Destroyed by fire on several occasions, notably in 1986 and 1989, the forest on this hill needs to be cleared and then replanted, if it is to resume its important role in the local ecosystem.
The Board of Directors was unanimous in its decision to support this project. The master watchmakers of Audemars Piguet immediately set to work to design an exclusive new Royal Oak watch handcrafted in platinum, with an automatic movement, and a dial sculpted in the form of a royal oak. The Manufacture has given a guarantee that this watch shall remain unique.
Audemars Piguet presented the watch to the Foundation as a gift, to be auctioned off at the Hôtel Crillon in Paris before an international audience. The auction was organised by Fred, the jewellers.
When the auction ended, the members of the Audemars Piguet Foundation were able to present a cheque for FF 900,000 to Prince Albert of Monaco, who accepted it in the name of France's Office National des Eaux et Forêts.
